A brief history of Mountain House, CA

Mountain House derived its name from the peak of the California Gold Rush, when it served as a rest stop for miners traveling from San Francisco to the Sierra Madre mountains.

The first ever house in the area was built by Thomas Goodall in 1849. It was an adobe house where miners, farmers, businessmen, and immigrants alike would stop and rest before resuming their travels. Eventually, the area was purchased by Simon Zimmerman, who turned Mountain House into a way station.

Many villages and small towns would be established in the years that followed, but many were soon dissolved. The ones that remained became part of the villages that now form Mountain House and its surroundings.
